What Baby Names Are At Risk Of Extinction?

18th May 2023

Baby name trends are constantly evolving, and there is a much bigger variety of children monikers these days than there was a few decades ago. This means some names are falling by the wayside, as others rise in popularity.

Expectant parents who are thinking long and hard about what to call their bump when they are born might be interested to read research by Comparethemarket, which revealed the names that are at risk of extinction.

The price comparison site analysed data from the Office for National Statistics, and found that Varsha, Brooke, Tamar, Lucy and Chloe were the five girls’ names that had dropped most in popularity since 2011.

When it comes to boys, Arun, Dayton, Dylan, Owen and Kai had experienced the biggest declines over the last 12 years.

Anna McEntee from Comparethemarket told Liverpool Echo: “Choosing a baby name is a very personal and exciting decision for families. It's fascinating to see baby name trends change over time.”

Parents-to-be might be inspired by BabyCenter’s most recent poll of top baby names. In 2022, Olivia was found to be the most popular choice for girls, while Liam took the number one spot for boys.

The top five also included Emma, Amelia, Ava and Sophia, Noah, Olivier, Elijah and Mateo.

Once the baby has been born and given their beautiful name, many parents want to remember how tiny and perfect their little one is. That is why booking a baby hand and foot mold is a great way to immortalise this special moment in time.
