10 Things You’ll Find in Every Family Home
2nd August, 2018
The family home is a place of love and treasured memories. Whether your children have grown up and flown the nest or have only just entered your lives, there will always be a selection of items that are sure to be found in every family home. Some of these items seemingly have no use, but will provide years’ worth of entertainment when they’re dug up, and are associated with happy times in your lives. Here are just ten things we think you’ll find in every family home:
Photo Album Full Of Baby Photos
No visit to your parent’s house would be complete without them digging out your old baby photos. These are often amongst a parent’s most prized possessions and bring back floods of memories each and every time. Despite the digital age moving many photographs onto phones, tablets and computers, the art of photo albums and frames still remain ever popular. Some homes will have walls lined with photos from your entire childhood, while others will have stacks of boxes containing a photo album from their childhood and their parents. Either way, this is one of the most endearing, and sometimes embarrassing, things to be found in a family home.
Aside from beautiful photographs, parents also love to keep their baby keepsakes safe. From our stunning baby casts of hands and feet to first pairs of shoes, blanket, hospital wristband and a plethora of other items, these little trinkets hold a lifetime of memories and are completely unique.
A Drawer Full of Rubbish
Every home has a drawer filled with useless bits and pieces, often containing dead batteries, odd screws, a classic Nokia 3210, and random cables that you have no idea what their use is, amongst other questionable items. These items are unlikely to ever be touched again, but for some reason, none of us seem to be able to get rid of these pieces of rubbish, it’s just tradition! More often than not, and certainly in our household, it seems to be the place you find the random things you are looking for, whether you knew they were there or not!
Random Arts and Crafts
Throwback to pipe cleaners, glitter glue, pom poms, hama beads and tissue paper, the craft drawer/box/cupboard is a child’s dream come true! These items can be carefully crafted into a vast array of innovative creations, providing hours of entertainment to people of all ages. Again, even your own parents will likely still have a box of these crafty gems and have kept them in preparation for their grandchildren to enjoy.
A Height Chart
Whether you have a beautiful chart or simply use a wall or doorframe, a height chart is an essential in the family home. Marking your child’s journey through life and watching just how quickly they grow up is remarkable, and something that you’ll look back on for many, many years to come. It’s likely to have a variety of different pen colours and handwriting, as well as the names of multiple children that have been added over the years.
Treasuring academic achievements has long been a family tradition, from keeping awards in a prized position on the mantle to filling an entire cupboard with all the primary and secondary school books, arts, crafts, letters and photographs. Naturally, you’ll want to keep them all; who doesn’t want to look back on the poems they wrote aged 4?
Homemade Christmas Decorations
Would Christmas really be the same if there wasn’t a child’s handmade decoration or two dotted around the tree or the house? With materials ranging from card to clay, embellished with sparkling glitter, googly eyes and whatever else the kids can get their hands on, the magic of Christmas just wouldn’t be the same without these lovely little treats!
A Jam-Packed Calendar
As a parent, planning out your time is essential if you want to ensure that everything gets done and you don’t miss any special occasions. Typically found in the kitchen, this calendar will have every activity scheduled in, from birthdays and parties to dentist appointments and extra-curricular activities. There will be events scribbled out, notes that are almost illegible, but you know that life as a parent would fall apart if it wasn’t for this paper planning saviour! Plus, there’s no joy quite like hanging up a fresh calendar in the new year!
Birthday & Christmas Cards That Are Decades Old
You never know, you might forget that you had your 7th birthday or a Christmas in 1993 if you didn’t have the cards to prove it! Some of the cards will be from neighbours and relatives, some of which you’ll not even remember, and others will be from your favourite uncle and your best friends. A box of cards will always provide you with a good read if you’re feeling low, and that’s why we keep them all!
Every child has a toy that they simply adore and cannot be without, some kids even have a few, and so it is pretty much written in the parent’s rulebook that they must be kept forever. New parents or those with young children will probably have an overflowing store of toys, which are updated on a regular basis and can often be found spread across a number of rooms.
