Celebrating 20 Years of Image Casting
27th July, 2018
This summer Image Casting celebrates its 20th birthday so we thought we would take a look back at how the company came into being and how we got to where we are today.
In 1995, Fiona Mordaunt (nee Welch) began working for a theatrical costume company specialising in body casting for the entertainment industry. While developing her craft of body casting, Fiona was increasingly asked to take bespoke body casts for individual customers. With this in mind, in 1998, Fiona decided to open her very own face and body casting studio in Balham and the company became known as Image Casting.
Being in the heart of Nappy Valley, Fiona was asked more and more about baby hand and feet casting and before long, this became the focus of the company. There were very few other companies offering this service and to this day we have maintained the ethos of providing premium materials to capture the fine detail in our casts using only resin, real metals and glass.
As the orders increased, a Studio Worker and a Casting Artist joined the company to share the workload and Fiona moved out of her studio and into a larger unit underneath the railway arches in London Bridge.
It was at this stage in 2009 that I joined Fiona initially to help on the business side and to develop a Casting Kit, as she was getting an increasing number of enquiries from new Mum’s outside of London. Our kits have been incredibly successful, and we now have customers in Australia, Japan, Europe, the US and many countries in between as well as across the UK.
The wonderful Alexa joined our team in November 2009 as a Studio Worker, creating the beautiful resin casts and she continues to make our cushions for us after she moved to Norfolk. Our congratulations to Alexa who will soon be getting a set of casts of her own as she is expecting a baby boy in August!
Following Alexa’s departure, good fortune reigned upon us as our next Studio Worker, Mandy, joined the team and we soon saw her amazing eye for detail and her passion for casting.
Fiona’s own bundle of joy, Ella, arrived in February 2010 and with the product creation in very safe hands with Mandy, Fiona could take the time out to concentrate on being a full time Mum. Her life then took another exciting twist with a move to Botswana where she currently lives with her husband and Ella.
Having initially thought I would work with Image Casting for a few years, I enjoyed it so much that I bought Fiona’s share of the company when she moved away and nine years later I am still very much involved with running the company.
We relocated the workshop to Battersea in 2012, as it was a more convenient location for me and Mandy.
It has been an exciting time and we are proud to have introduced new lines to our range such as glass casts, miniatures and fingerprint jewellery as well as extending the range of casts we create. Family casts are increasing in popularity whether it is everyone holding hands or a framed set of hands – parents, children and the family dog’s paw!!
We have always been open to new opportunities and were delighted when ITV London Studios asked us to create plaques for their Wall of Fame – casts to date include Sir Ian McKellen, Sir David Jacobi, Frances de la Tour, Ben Elton and Alan Davies.
The workshop remains in Battersea today with Mandy at the helm, running the workshop and managing the day-to-day business. I moved out of London to Yorkshire in 2015 and now look after the website, marketing and the admin side of the business from a distance.
The business wouldn’t be where it is today without all the amazing people that have been involved along the way.
We’re celebrating the occasion with a 20-day promotion offering 20% off all our casts – so if you are a new customer or old, spread the word so more people can enjoy the wonder of our unique timeless keepsakes.
